“As photographer and storyteller, I am entirely devoted to raise awareness through my images about the conservation of wildlife species and natural habitats”

Bruno D’Amicis was born in Rome in 1979. After a few years of experiences abroad, he now lives and works in the shadow of the Abruzzi mountains, whilst still traveling to dozens of foreign countries for his projects. A nature enthusiast since his childhood and passionate photographer since 1994, Bruno has earned a cum laude master degree in Biology and he has become full-time nature photographer in 2004, his main focus being the conservation of natural habitats and biodiversity and  the relationship with the wilderness.

His work has obtained worldwide recognition and among the awards worth mentioning are first prizes at World Press Photo, at Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the overall prize at the GDT – Fritz Pölking Prize, plus countless other awards. His images have been published on press media (National Geographic Magazine, GEO, BBC Wildlife, etc.), books and calendars both in Italy and abroad. Three of his images have been chosen to illustrate the Canon campaign “Wildlife as Canon sees it” on National Geographic Magazine. Among his personal accolades, Bruno has been the first photographer to document the presence of African lions in the mountain forest of Kafa Biosphere Reserve (Ethiopia) in 2012 and, in 2018, the first to get pictures of wild wolves on a sea shore in Italy.

His photography is widely known for authenticity and for showing rare or unusual subjects, presented in complete photo stories and with images that give importance both to the nature of the subject and the context this lives in.

He regularly works in close collaboration with protected areas and NGOs both in Italy and in the rest of the World (WWF, Birdlife International, NABU, UNESCO, Rewilding Europe). He has been working for the National Geographic Society and the BBC Natural History Unit. He has been regularly invited as speaker on TV and at international and prestigious events. Bruno has also been a speaker at TEDx event in 2016. Because of his vast experience, Bruno has often been invited to judge the most important international competitions such as World Press Photo, Wildlife Photographer of the Year, European Nature Photographer of the Year and Montphoto. Bruno has been named Canon Ambassador in 2020 and has previously been a sponsored testimonial for Manfrotto, Gitzo tripods, Leica optics and Montura.

He likes to put together visual media, education and conservation in projects he carries out in several countries beside Italy and his beloved Apennines mountains. Among such project, the ambitious multimedia project “L’Altro Versante”, entirely devoted to celebrating the Italian natural landscapes. The project which started in 2014 was carried out by Bruno together with two other professional photographers and a filming crew. The images resulting from this long work have illustrated a series of books published in 2019 by National Geographic and La Repubblica called “Le Montagne Incantate” and, more recently, a unique, limited edition large-format photo book, called “Sublime” which comes signed and numbered by the authors. Until the release of the latter, Bruno had already published five books: “The Last Stronghold” on the bears and the endangered wilderness of the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia; “Ornata”, ten years of pictures of the Apennine chamois and its habitat, “The Last Summer”, stories from the last mountain shepherds in the Majella mountains, and the highly acclaimed “Time for Wolves”, focusing on his ground-breaking, longterm work on wild wolves in Italy. “The Secret of the Giants”, on Italy’s primeval beech forests, UNESCO World Heritage Site, was released in late 2018. At the present, Bruno is working on the multimedia initiative, “The Bear and the Ant”, to produce visuals (both stills and video) and to create an interactive website, a book and a multimedia exhibition focussing on the critically endangered Apennine brown bears.

Bruno, being one of the leading nature photographers of Italy, has been named honorary member of AFNI (Associazione Fotografi Naturalisti Italiani). He is also a fellow of GDT (German nature photographers association) and he has been taking part to the pan-european project “Wild Wonders of Europe”.
