DOMENICO, THE SUMMER OF A MOUNTAIN SHEPHERD
For millennia the mountain plateaus of Majella in Abruzzo have provided very suitable summer pastures
for thousands of sheep and goats. Every spring, dozens of shepherds from regions as far as Apulia made
a long trip on foot, the so-called “transhumance”, to bring their flocks to this mountain. With the
arrival of autumn, they would move back to the lowlands.
The shepherd Domenico Di Falco has brought his flock of sheep and goats to graze on the pastures of
Majella for over fifty years. From the 1st of June until the end of August he lives in a small natural
cave, completely alone in the wilderness if it wasn’t for his animals and the occasional hikers, who
sometimes pay him a visit. It is a tough job that follows only sun and tradition. Once he was just a
shepherd among many others, now he is the last one.
